I have many questions for you quys. I'm planing to upgrade my P3 500 system to a P4 2 gHz. How does the 845D chipset perform next to a RDRAM solution ? Do you have links that compare to two ?
Would you rather chose a 854D chipset with 1 Gig of memory or a 850 chipset mobo equipped with 512 meg of memory. Between these 2, wich would give me the best performance ? I plan to use the machine for games.
I have been off the computer scene for about 1 1/2 years (remember the times of AGN3D) so I have many things to "relearn"
Thanks for your input

my input on your questions is that 1GB of ram is overkill for games...512MB is plenty unless you are running a database server (or game server w/ 8+ players)...or using photoshop, etc to manipulate huge pics. i'd put the $$$ into other components to speed up the system.

I'd say pair up that p4 (NW i hope) with the i850 and 512 of 1066 RDRAM
if you look at my sig youll see I have just about the best performing DDR solution and its truly amazing...but at a negligible cost difference the 1066 rdram will really kick the memory bandwidth in the arse...
if your starting from scratch there's really no reason not to go RDRAM....

check the p4 1.6a reviews at Hardocp - the newer higher clocking ddr boards compete seriously with the rambus boards -

Once again though ddr is speed and RD is bandwith. which is more important to you?

i have a p4 with RD ram and an athlon w/ DDR2700 and there isn't much difference, in my opinion

but with the 32bit pc1066 rdram you get both
I love my DDR rig but if i didnt already have the pc2700 when i bought a NW i'd have gone rdram...
same price...better bandwidth...hella fast once you oc it...

lonewolf- any tricks to setting up the msi 645U? mine just arrived today - what kind of a ps do you have on that rig?

the latency with the rd ram is still there though.

dont wanna hijack the thread but feel free to icq me 25505004
most importantly tho...
set up the bios the way you like it...reboot....load setup defaults...reboot....reset bios way you like it....
otherwise you'll be bald by midnight....
using a 400W Antec ATM but occasionally use a 430w Enermax FMA (my custom Lian Li is designed around that psu...)

Yes I admit that 1 gig of memory is overkill for games. I live in Canada and here I have yet to find a place were RAMBUS is in the same price range as DDR. My question is should I go with a "true" P4 systems or go with a DDR solution and keep that money for other part.

u sure? RDram prices should be around the same or even cheaper now
last i checked the cost (not selling price) is around 120 cdn for a 256 PC800 by Samsung, but that was 3 months ago and i know that RDRAM hasnt gone up
