....replace the fan in a power supply?

I FINALLY figured out why I thought a 27 dBA fan was too loud. I TOTALLY forgot about my Power Supply fan. It is like 32 dba, and drowns out all my 27dba and lower fans (5 total). I replaced my Sanyo Denki on my AX7 with my Enermax Adjustable, same temps, with TONS less sound. My chipset fan also creates a ton of noise too, but I will soon purchase a chipset heatsink.
So, is it safe to do? I may just get another adjustable fan. but, how much CFM should I get? I was thinking around 30cfm, as it's only an 80mm fan. Or, should I buy a new PS, and sell the one I have now? I would love one of Antec's new PSU's, but they cost an arm and a leg..

That's something I've yet to do. But I think there is a way it needs to be done so maybe wait till someone who's done it posts.
I have an antec with dual fans and it is good and quiet. But if yours is working fine then why change. Changing the fan might be fun eh.

dude 32db's ain't nuttin'... u want noise come to work with me for 1 day and you'll appreciated 32db's of noise... Deal 90-120 dbs constantly all day long... And i wonder why i'm going deaf...lol If i was you i wouldn't worry about it... you crack open that PSU and any warranty on it is void. Is it worth it to you?

Argg.. Dang. I wanted my computer silent.. And, actually, Pred, I forgot all about warrenty. Glad you reminded me of that.
Well, can anyone reccommend a cheap quiet power supply? Jeez, this is dumb.. Man.. PSU's cost soo much too.. How much money do you think I could get for my 400 watt Antec PSU?

The Enermax Whispers are quiet but Enermax is a big POS as far as i'm concerned. Shitty 5v rails. I took our my Enermax and put in a Generic 350W supply. This generic one has a lot better voltage than the enermax and it came with the womans case... lol i put a 300W in hers she don't need that kinda power. Why does the noise bother you so much anyways... with the mods you've done it has to be practically silent as it is... i'd save my cash buy a fast video card. I don't even the notice the noise my computer makes... My bro's buddy has a db tester thing cause he's a car audio freak and goes to those db drags... we put it in my chair which is about 2 ft from my case and it only pulled 31db's... Which ain't much noise at all... I know the Sparkle PSU's i've heard are noisey. I'd drop down to a 350W Antec... I know for a fact those don't make much noise at all... I put one in my old roommates computer and i couldn't notice it. With what your running in your case 400 is way overkill IMHO. i'm guessing you should be able to get at least 60-70 for that 400W Antec supply if its P4 ready.

pretty easy to do...
first of all unplug it and let it sit foir at least an hour before even thinking of touching it...
just remove the four screws on the bottom of psu
pull off the U shaped plate
on the main pcb youll see little white headers for the fans to plug into...just pull the cord and unscrew the fan...
just remember to keep clear of the caps and youll be fine...BTW...those clear fans in enermax's make for great blowhole fans

That's all my case is, clear enermax fans. I don't think i will be modding my PSU anymore, don't want screw anything up, or kill myself..
Pred, can you explain how you judge PSU's on that information? i don't understand anything about it. Right now, my Antec keeps pretty steady, the only thing i worry about is the 12.15-12.19 V going into my 12v line.. Everything is fine and dandy..
Yes, its P4 ready.

heh I remember an unfortunate accident I had...
was mounting my psu innards in the lili pc30's lower front hdd cage but didnt isolate the contacts well enough...
can you say boom...scared the crap outta myself
amazing thing is all that electricity spiked through the entire aluminum case and despite a couple scorch marks on the ak31's mounting holes everything still was alive

Teh Enermax 365P-VE FC i had was a Joke... 5v rail on my Epox 8k7a was 4.65 to 4.7 that was running stock speeds. On my iwill XP333 it was 4.75 to 4.8 which is withing the +/- 5% but still if you ask me if it drops below 4.9 its a shitty PSU... enermax aer overpriced. u can do the same thing with another type... Get one and find out for yourself... Some have luck others tos them outas fast as they get them... Personally i think your throwing a bunch of money down the drain but hey it ain't mine!

I had the same problem with the enermax/epox-iwill situation...
tho in their defense the newer FMA models dont exhibit the same behaviour...

My original PCs PS fan died twice during its 5 yr life (until my son destroyed it) and radio shack had a fan that was the exact same size. Havent had to do it in a newer PC but it's no big deal.

Now that you mention how easy it is. Does anyone even know how long the warrenty is? I bought my case back in August, from EtoYou.com. The case came with this power supply, so does it even come with a warrenty?
