I normally post @ [H] but there is truly to much spam going on today there. Well, I am making my own desk. Its going to be with a $100 budget and here are the specs:
99"x66"
CD Shelves
Powerbox ( a box where all power goes into)
shelves ontop of the monitor
computer in a slide out draw
these are just some
I want to know is it worth my time to write up a how-to.
Please reply

wow, this would have been nice about a month ago

I had a desk with specific deminsions so that it could fit in my closet, and my budget was $100. Was thinking of building something but got too impatient and just went out and bought a cheap $80 desk. It's ok, but not what I wanted.
So yeah, post a how-to or faq or whatever you feel interested in

Nexus, that would be very nice of you. I will be getting material probably monday. I should have everything done by Tuesday. I just dont know if I should spray-paint black or paint with a nice wood color.

Use a stain color. IMO it would look better than spray paint and plus you don't have as much of a hassle when you need to redo it.

a $100 budget seems a little small
what are you gonna make it out of??
oak and plywood?
Do you have all the neccessary tools to make it look nice? (sanders, saws, etc....)
You do know how to work with bracing and such so it wont fall apart in a few weeks?
I am sure it will still turn out better than that $10,000 desk

Yep, if you post a how to I'll read it!
Been planning to build my own computer center anyway, might pick up some good points.
With all the High Priced Black Laquer funiture on the market that looks nice, thats what I was thinking for mine. Could use cheaper but strong matierials. With a stained finish it might look better and more expensive if using really good wood. But I like the idea of using cheaper wood then painting over any defects! I guess most of that is do to the fact I know I will make several mistakes I can fill and paint over that would show badly if stained. I'm not that good at wood working to make a cherrywood desk, or I would!!
Personally I also like High gloss black, and would paint a gold leaf type trim around the exposed egdes. If latter I got fancy with doors and drawers and decorate them I would probably do them in Brite red. Just my wierd taste!
I like the idea of the computer in a slide out drawer. How do you plan to vent the sytsem if it's boxed in, and how easy is it to get to the cables in the rear?
For my plans to build my own I was going to make a duct going to the side where I would install a large fan and filter. Dust is a big problem around my place. The fan would suck air though the filter, blow it into the computer box where the system fans draw it in the sides and out the back, then vent the hotter air away out the back. Hadn't planned to use a slide on mine, just a box with a door on front. Would like to see yours ideas.
Also toying with the idea of building a custom case, or building the system into the desk.
Might be cool to have the system hidden out of site, and just the drives mounted on a shelf in easy reach! Really all I need easy access to is floppy, cd cdrives and such plus a power switch. everything else could be located elsewhere!
What might be the reaction between CdRW drives and wood?
AN interesting thought!
