Interesting problem with CD-R

I have an HP 9100 burner on my server (P3-300, 96Mb, NT 4.0 Server SP6a). I have Nero 5 and EZ CD Creator 5 installed as well as Fireburner for CUE/BINS. DirectCD is NOT installed.

This box is my Cable router/print server/file server and standalone burner.

Anyway, this rig has been working just fine but starting a few weeks ago I couldn't erase any CDRWs in either CD Creator or Nero. CD Creator gives me an error saying it can't erase it - try again, maybe it's dirty BLAH BLAH BLAH.

Nero just locks up before the erase starts (although once in a while it works). Can't close Nero even using task manager when it's locked up like this - have to log off or reboot.

However both apps burn CDs just fine - either CDRW or CDR.

I installed NTI Backup Now! on a whim, since it also has a CD Erase utility, and low and behold Backup Now! erases CDRWs just fine.

I am most puzzled, but right now I'm using Backup Now! to erase CDs and Nero to Burn (I only keep CD Creator in there in case I have to walk a client who has it through a burn on the phone).

Nothing's changed on this system so I'm puzzled.

I have a 4 month old Ghost image of the boot partition which, worse comes to worse, I'll restore (nothing's changed on this system in a year).

It's just bugging me why this is happening. I hate mysteries. The fact that Backup Now erases just fine pretty much eliminates any problem with the hardware.

Any ideas?

Aside from never having heard anything good about an HP CD burner? ;)

You might try removing the apps, deleting the directories and reinstalling them. Lately (I've found the half dozen PC's at work which have the full version of Acrobat 5 are becoming unstable. I have to R/R the app to get them to work again.

Done that Paul. Made no diff.

I've actually had great luck with HP burners - I've never owned anything but.

Next one, however, will probably be a Plextor.

This one's only a year old, though, and 8x is more than fast enough since it's on a standalone system.

Has to be some kind of funky software conflict problem. I have installed a few apops in this thing and maybe something upset the apple cart. As I said, I'll probably restore to an earlier image of the boot partition before the problem occured.

sure its not a problem with the aspi layers conflicting?

Adaptec ASPI Layer Checker app says they're properly installed and fully operational.

They are a bit dated - 5/10/99. Maybe I'll try to update them.
----------------------------
No that's not a problem. v4.6 IS the latest and according to Roxio CD Creator 5 doesn't use ASPI anymore, and I'm certain Nero doesn't either.

I know you said that you're not using DirectCD, but on my system using Win98 and DirectCD, I could not erase or format a CD-RW until I deleted this file Scsi1hlp.vxd located in the Windows\System\IOSUBSYS folder. Actually, I just renamed the file so it would not load at boot up.

Nice try but no cigar - that file doesn't exist on this system (and yes I made sure all system & hidden files were visible).

Wierd.

actually i think hp burners are some of the best around
Most are rebadged sonys

I installed nero on a computer that had easy cd creator onb it and the thing just continually blue screened so i think there is a software conflict
