do 7200 rpm hdd's wear out faster than 5400 rpm hdd's?. i never owned one so i dont know

No, 7200 and 5400 have about the same expected lifetime. I have no knowledge about 7200 RPM drives wearing out faster than 5400RPM drives.
But it's interesting to see that IBM recently introduced a new "333 power-on hours per month" recommendation outlined in IBM's specs for their new Deskstar 120GXP ->

yeah, i am wondering what that means
cuz i leave my comp on 24/7, so ...
maybe its just IBM drives? I remember their GXP75 and GXP60 lines had stability problems due to heat or something along those lines

Not really. They generally DO generate more heat, and the heat can cause probelms for most components.. Some 5400 HD's didn't do too well: Maxtor had a... 540L ? about 6 or 7 years ago which had a failure rate of over 50% according to the Maxtor techs I spoke to. Heat was the primary reason for failure according to them. ( not poor bearing design. of COURSE not!

I can not understand why 5400 RPM drives are still on the market. The speed difference can be felt by the end user. And the money you save is really small compared to the performance gain.
