i've been using a 9gig ibm deskstar drive for almost 2 yrs in one of my systems. recently it's started to emit a "clicking" noise once in a while.
i already ran a full "surface scan" using norton. fortunately no bad sectors showed up. what the hell is that "clickity-clack" sound :-)
should i go ahead and back-up my data before the drive is doomed?

Everyone should make a backup of the most important data regularly ... unfortunatly this isn't common ...
Yes, make a backup, a new strange noise that just started isn't a good sign.
Get the Drive Fitness Test from
http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/download.htm and run a check on your drive.

the clicking noise is bad sign. That means part of your hardrive or the entire hardrive is unredable. usually bad sector or damaged one. If you really want to see if its bad cable. Remove your ide cable from the hardrive if you hear clicking noise that means the hardrive is damaged. If you dont hear the clicking noise that means that you have a bad ide cable

Go to the IBM site and under support they should have a hard drive test program download and follow their instructions. All manufacturers have these test programs and require them to be run prior to any rma being issued.
Strange noises in a hard drive are always a bad sign. Lots of fast spinny things near fixed things, bad combo!
