Been fiddling with 3 pc's. This one has the older Fujitsu 17gig hdd UDMA 66 inside. For a few weeks i have been trying a few cpu,mobo combos and o\clocking them etc.
I just settled down with my msi mobo and XP1700. Got things up and running ok, till my hdd gets several bad sectors. Like i said i had been playing around with diff. combos and diff. hdd's. I only left this udma 66 inside cos it was already win98se and had some files m wanted.

So i have been running my system at 140-158FSB, 158 being the latter. when i shut down and started win one day scandisk told me i had damaged info. got into windows ran scandisk in thorough mode. did not count the bad sectors but it seems to be around 40-60 of them.


I thought newer hdd's were alot safer these days.

can drop down to pio mode 4 which is no prob. rather have a faster cpu/mem than hdd.

First of all Futjistu drives are JUNK (my opinion, but ask around - there's a reason why they're so cheap and have the shortest warranty period in the business). I wouldn't use one for a doorstop, and I certainly wouldn't trust important data on it. In the IT business I've seen these drives fail FAR too often.

Being that Fujitsu drives are cheap junk to begin with, I would be very concerned about running one on an off frequency PCI bus.

Yes, drives are still sensitive to PCI bus speeds. It's not the overclock per-se, it's the fact that some drives and controllers are touchy about the PCI bus clock speed. Even an underclocked PCI bus can cause problems.

It's a trial and error thing, and you also need to rely on reviews from others using the same hardware.

The the hardware COMBINATION might be more important that the individual hardware. I had an ABit BE6-II who's onboard UDMA controller would fail to initialize the boot drive during POST if the PCI bus was more than 5 Mhz off frequency. However this only happened with a WDC 30Gb drive. A 30Gb Maxtor worked fine. I switched to an IWill UDMA controller card on the same mobo and it worked fine with either drive.

It's rather silly to drop to PIO mode 4, but that's a personal call. Why would you want to criple the speed of your drive sub-system so dramatically (and switching from UDMA to PIO4 is a BIG performance difference).

To be honest with you I'd do a little research online and find out what hard drives are good for overclocking and sell that Fujitsu POS drive (or just keep it as a spare). You should also research how fussy your onboard controller is to overclocking as well. You should check the overclocking forum here an some of the overclocking sites like:

Be aware you're pushing your system WAY beyond spec by going as high as 158 and it might be a number of stability issues causing your problem. Could be your drive and controller are fine but at that speed you're getting an occasional corrupt data transfer across the I/O bus that's scrambling your drive.

Overclocking is inherently risky and you may just be pushing your luck at 158. Try backing off a bit.

IBM HD's are notorious for being bitchy at anything past 150 fsb. I recommend maxtor or seagate, but definitely get rid of that Fujitsu.

Seems fujitsu sux. Dam i have 2 of them one a udma100. I got a maxtor 40gig udma 100 which i will put in this rig.

I know for a fact that IBM are shit past 150...lol At 155 it fubared the drive bad sectors and the works my other comp when i slaved it in wouldn't even boot into windows... IBM's drive utility erased it and hid the bad sectors then 3 days later it did it again this time at 133 needless to say that drive got sent back to ibm and once i get a new one back.... Its gettin' sold... Get a maxtor this one in my comp now don't have any trouble with higher FSB.

I messed up Installs when pusing the fsb a bit to much but never Killing a drive. man that would suck. I had bought a 60g maxtor the otherday and there was um a Quantom in the bo...I understand they own them but that ant right.
