Arctic Alumina and always use these instructions .

I've tested as 2 and the new as 3, alumina is the best mostly because it's by far the easiest to clean up and the performance is about the same as the others. With as 2 or 3 you *might get a degree or 2 cooler at best. But if cleaning up isn't a big thing and if you'll apply it once then you may as well go for the new as 3.

Pred mentioned that alumina might cause a problem on an XP cpu if too much is applied and runs off the core.

I use this stuff:

You get a ton of it and it works as good or better than the other stuff and it cleans off easier. It shouldn't conduct electric like others and it doesn't creep like the silicon based stuff.

I use regular white crap and I've never had a CPU run hotter than it should.

hmmmm

hell, do u really need that stuff? i run my system fairly often, and rarely had the cpu temp above 50c. heck the only time it was, was when i ran it for 5 days strait dl'ing a new OS. so it was runnin full speed all the time. it was a 1.33 AMD athlon, and even during the 5 days, it neva got above 52c. case is always closed (although the fron panel is off) and i only have the heatsink and a small fan inside. does thermal grease really help that much more? should i be usin it???

Generally the advice is: Never run an AMD processor without some type of thermal grease. Or at least that is the advice I give when it comes to thunderbirds and even XP.

I have arctic silver 3 now sent for testing. I still prefer alumina. as 2 is the worst for cleaning up and as 3 isn't much better. Alumina cleans up so much easier. Mainly though I could never get much of a temp difference at all and I tested many times. Either in mobo monitor or using a temp sensor touching the cpu core, not enough diff to justify using it over alumina.

And honz, whoa amigo, DO USE something. Even that radio snack stuff helps. You need thermal compound to assist in trasferring heat to the heatsink. It'd help lower your temps by at least 10-20 degrees. I'd guess anyway. I never ran a cpu without it and I ain't about to start.
