printer and software conflict

My dad's using this software for real estate agents, and it wont print properly with the printer he's using (panasonic kxp6500)

the printer works with other stuff, like MS Word, but it fudges when it prints from that software, and thats kinda important since he uses it to print contracts

the "tech support" guy told me to install some HP drivers, and i was like "how does that help, i dont have an HP printer", but he just told me to do it...

he's running winxp (upgraded from win me), the system's perfectly stable unlike it was from win me, but now the printer wont work.

panasonic hasnt released new drivers since 1996, so i m just using default XP drivers. Is there a way I can trick windows into thinking its a different printer? Or should I just tell my dad to buy a new printer

Hmmm . . . I'd say he needs a new printer. Especially if the manufacturer no longer updates the drivers for it. :)

If it worked under ME and doesn't work under XP then it's an XP issue. Either the printer driver or the real estate program isn't fully compatible with XP.

You may buy a new printer and find it still doesn't work right because the software isn't XP compliant (you should ask tech support).

No big suprise - lot's of people are running into this problem.

If everything worked fine under ME, I'd seriously consider going back to it. ME is perfectly stable if it's installed properly and your drivers are all up to date.

win ME started out stable, but eventually it started crapping out on him and it crashed like twice an hour

so i was lazy, and just popped in XP and upgraded, and the crashes stopped completely

personally, i think its the program that's incompatible with XP, but it may also be related to the printer. I might pick up an HP inkjet (i need one anyways) and see whether it works on his computer. If it does, then ...

or, i might uninstall and install win2k on his box. Thing is, each time I reinstall the software I need to call them up for a new CD Key, and its really annoying cuz they take days to respond and my dad can't afford any downtime.

what do you mean fudges out?

i had printer once an lexmark z11 and when the printer head got dirty it would print out word docs fine but webpages or programs it will be like its smudge out or something it was horrible. i decided to clean the headers of the ink cartridge and align it. sometimes inkjet printers need to be realign and to clean the head of ink cartridge.

hope this helps

some printers come with software on driver to allow you to clean the head of ink cartridge and align it

its a laser actually, and we got a drum last year, so i dont think its that

okay, for example, the contract should say

"Contract Agreement"

but instead of an 'o', there's a q

but on the next one, its an o, but the A is a q or something like that

its a 6 year old printer, but we still have a couple of toner refills left, so i'd like to use those up first before getting a new printer...that's about 6000 pages worth :)

it worked fine in win me, and worked fine for me in win2k...but then again, its only his program that is giving him problems, everything else : word, excel, outlook, internet explorer all prints fine
