First let me start off by saying I am a dumbass. Read on...

Running XP, radeon 64ddr vivo using the 3276's. In games there isn't a refresh rate problem but all other apps the refresh rate is horrble. The flickering is driving me nuts. Under display properties I have the rate set to 85 but changing it doesn't make a difference. If I change it 100 it flickers as bad as when it's set at 60, leading me to believe the refresh rate really isn't changing. The problem didn't occur until i decided to try different vid card drivers (thus the dumbass comment). I am back using the latest XP certified drivers from ATI(3276). I also updated my monitor drivers (viewsonic PF790).

First off, ATI drivers have ALWAYS (at least before the Radeon - not sure about Radeon) had their own monitor refresh settings tab in the advanced section of display properties. I've always found this annoying. Changing the refresh in the regular settings tab will do nothing - you have to use their tab. It's usually called "Monitor Adjustments".


If that's not the problem, then see if your monitor reports what refresh you're using. Usually it's displayed when you bring up the monitor onscreen adjustments menu on the monitor itself, or it might be a selection in that menu (I'm taking about the onscreen adjustments menu that pops up when you use the controls on the monitor).

Most modern monitors do tell you the refresh rate in the onscreen display.

If you can confirm the refresh is actually above 60 but it still flickers you may have a bad card or monitor, or a driver issue.

If you really can't change the refresh and it's stuck at 60, then it's probably a driver issue.

Try completely uninstalling the Radeon driver and utility in the Add/Remove programs menu in control panel, then set the video card driver to Standard VGA.

Reboot and let it redect the card and re-install the driver.

thanks FP. I checked the on screen display for the monitor and it said the refresh rate was 85. I then put in a radeon 7200, used the same drivers as I did with the ddr vivo. Lo and behold problems are gone. For now I think I will leave well enough alone.

This program is from the makers of Powerstrip and solved all my refresh rate problems in XP.

Thanks Piper. I have tried powerstrip before and never had much luck with it. I check out Multires though.
