Anyone have problems getting a Logitech cordless optical mouse to detect?

Here's todays "fun" : I had the top of the line Logitech cordless optical mouse (3 button with wheel) on my main PC working great too and I like its back button alot SO I decide to get the same mouse for my laptop which also had a Logitech cordless optical mouse w wheel BUT only 2 buttons (no back button). Both PCs run Win2K Pro.

So today the refurbished mouse arrives for the laptop BUT I can't get it detect. You're suppose to press the receiver, then press a small button on the mouse yet it's not working. I then try to get it working on my main PC so I first remove the batteries from its mouse and get the new mouse to detect and work SO both mice did detect and function on my main PC. Now the "fun" begins as I then try to get the main PCs mouse to re-detect BUT it now doesn't. I then re-boot and no cordless mouse or cordless keyboard (yes, that too and also Logitech) no longer work at all so I had to plug in the ol' wired versions for the time being.

No matter what I try, I'm unable to get any of my 2 3 button mice to detect on the laptop BUT I plug in the other 2 button mouse that did work just fine before and it's still working great.

Yes, new software was installed as the instructions say and I had no problems with any of this stuff the first time either on my main PC which no longer allows any cordless devices.


Anyone have any problems with these devices and have any ideas short of calling their tech support #? I doubt that I now have bad mice as I did have both previously working at seperate times on my main PC. I have no idea why the laptop doesn't allow either of the 3 button types to detect either when the 2 button type works great.

Seen a lot of posts about problems with Logitech mice lately.

Also, keep in mind that laptops generally have a bastardized PS/2 port (since it's compined with the external keyboard port) that often doesn't fully support some mice.

I've run into several laptops that will not properly work with MS Optical mice, and several that also won't properly support the wheel.

I remember one client's computer that would work with any mouse except an older MS 2 button PS/2.

I use both an optical cordless mouse and kb both made by logitech and both have never been a problem. Except when the battery gets weak.

I'd just try another usb port or the ps2 adapter. I've never tried them with a laptop though. Perhaps check logitechs online tech support page faqs regarding laptops.

Thanks. I'll "play" with it later and check their site too. I'm using it with a USB port and I've tryed both too. I've also tryed the PS2 port but didn't matter. The only physical difference really between the "new" mouse and the one that's working fine on my laptop (USB port) is one added thumb button that I configure for a "back" button, otherwise the mice are very similar. The receivers look the same too and I've tryed switching them as well. I do also have new batteries.

It's weird that after trying the new mouse on my main PC that I've since managed to somehow make both cordless devices (mouse and keyboard) inop on that too but with "luck" maybe I can manage to get them functional again as well. I use the PS2 ports on the main PC because I've discovered that those 2 devices don't work in DOS when typing my bootup password or switching between OSs (dual boots) if I'm plugged into its USB ports with those cordless devices.

!!!Update!!!: (ALL is well now)
OK, found solution at Logitechs site (I know, who'ld have guessed heh?)
I found where it suggests removing batteries, then holding receiver "connect" button for 10 seconds, apparently clears previous channel settings, then re-install betteries. The new mouse now works A-OK on the laptop.

I then managed to get both cordless devices back to life on my main PC as well but I needed to re-install their software again for some odd reason.


In summary, there's ALOT of info at Logitechs website so if anyone else has problems with their devices, don't hesitate to check there first.

They're $69 at Office Depot so although "refurbished", they're still a very good deal. I'd also bet that they're returned because the original owner had problems getting them to detect properly on their PCs (easily solveable)

me gots one...
only gripe w/ that opt. mouse is the wireless is definitely not good for gaming..
sometimes a big laggy... this mean i end up shooting a halo around a guys head in CS... no good when i'm trying for a nice headshot....

I've had no probs with mine with any of the games I play (seems just like my corded mice) but I STILL havent tryed CS, believe it or not. I think it's because of something I've regarded as a hassle either trying to DL or install it to my recollection (not sure as it's been a while).

even though CS is old... i still like it.. and i've heard some nice things about the upcoming 1.4 version

I used my old Logitech cordless ball mouse in CS and did fine. I've heard more complaints about the newer ones and lag, though I'm not sure if that's just because they're used more widely now.

Could also just be a matter of settings as they don't work right in games if mouse acceleration is enabled.

Mouse acceleration should NEVER be enabled if you play FPS games. Causes all kinds of problems.
