I just installed a Ramdisk from SuperSpeed Software. I had been reading about it and figured I'd try it. I set it up for 100 megs. (I'm running XP Pro with 512 megs of Ram on a AMD XP 2000+)
Well the problem is now my dumbass doesn't know what the hell to do with it! Jeez.
The included help file was just about worthless to me. It explained how to set it up, about the speed increase and all about how innovative the company is but didn't get into some actual examples of how to use it.
I would really like to hear from people who are using one and just how they are using it. Especially how to go about putting something in there. I mean do you just install a program in there or what? Give me some detailed examples.
Thanks
Questions about Ramdisk
Hi Mike!!!
As I understand it, Ramdisk places a disk partition in your computer's physical ram. I doubt that this will give you any tangible benefits if you are just a regular home user. Actually it may harm overall system performance as it will claim a certain amount of RAM for the ramdrive itself.
The ramdrive should show up as a seperate drive letter in your explorer, typically drive "s". To use it, just treat it like a physical hard drive and load files to it.
[edit] Oh yeah, almost forgot, every time your computer get's turned off, everything in the ramdrive is lost.....

They do give some examples but I don't see the real need for the average Joe on a 1GHz+ machine with 256MB+ ...
It could speed up applications that do heavy file transfers while working, you would install the application to S: and have it run their (as explained on their page). Maybe you can speed up SETI or RC5 or Folding a lil ?!?
Their other suggestion to put the page/swap into the RAMdisk also doesn't make much sense for the average user. Swap/pagefile is normally only used by programs that run out of physical memory, so using a RAMdisk doesn't make sense.
WinNT/2000/XP puts some of the running executive programs into the virtual memory (on your hdd) but there are tweaks to avoid this, one for Win2000 can be found here .
A RAMdisk might help with programs that use a temp file by default, prolly some gfx apps.
I have 768MB and I don't use a RAMdisk, I just don't see the use in it with todays powerfull machines and I don't use software that might make a good use out of it.
Well, just do some tests like putting your favourite distributed client onto S: and see if it works faster. If it does and you want a RAMdisk you might want to check out other products as well. I checked the prices on that software and they're OUCH, $99 for XP Pro, $129 for 2000Pro ...
Yer might want to check out RAMdisk , prices seem more reasonable at $25 for Win9x and $35 for NT/2000, dunno about XP support. Their FAQ looks a lil more professional and I dunno if your software features this:
I might even give it a try, later, after I finished my Linuxbox.

OK, it won't help in case of a power outage but still a nice feature.RAMDisk can be configured to automatically load a disk image at startup and save the image to disk at shutdown. This allows the RAMDisk to function almost exactly like a hard disk; no data is lost when the power is turned off.
I might even give it a try, later, after I finished my Linuxbox.
Thanks guys for the info. I have already un-installed it. I just couldn't find anything to do with it. And like you said, that puppy is a 100 bucks!
Hey Corn (Mr. Vsync), what's up? I haven't heard from you for awhile.
BTW, I am still playing all my games with vsync off! Heh heh. Now on my GeForce 3 and soon to be GeForce 4! Heh!
