Dead mobo or CPU or both?

So I just was wondering people's thoughts on this...
I got a new mobob(EPOX EP-8K7A) and CPU(Athlon XP 1600).
Put them together started the thing up and after about 2 seconds, everything stopped.
Looked at the mobo carefully and found a dead resistor.
I rma'd the motherboard and got a new one, put the same CPU in, and after about two seconds all power was lost. I figured I had blown the CPU on the first bad board, so I ran to the store and picked p a new one. About 2 more seconds after power up, same crap happenned.
My thoughts are that the first bas mobo blew the first CPU. The bad CPU then blew the second mobo, which in turn blew the second CPU..
What do you all think of this?
Have you seen anything like this?
and what do you think the chances are that my RAM and vide card are fried?
When I get the new CPU/mobo from the RMA should I just scrap the RAM in case there's a short in there as well?
thanks for any thoughts..
