The instructions for my Cheetah X15 says to add a HDD cooler (or fan) so I found a spare fan and it's blowing on the HDDs underside but the fan has no filter so I know that it'll get dusty. Do HDD coolers usually have filters and are they better than just having a fan?
I know another guy with the same HDD who says it doesn't need a fan or HDD cooler, says it doesn't get that warm without one.
Opinions?

I dont have a HD cooler on any of my Cheetah's, The X15's and 3rd generations drives dont get that hot.
The problem with heat came from the 1st generation Cheetah drives. Once they went to LVD the heat was nolonger a problem.

OK, thanks. I'll remove the fan then.

I cool all my hd's. I have 3 9.1 cheetahs all lvd and they get worm enough 2 me. I sugest if U want quiet cooling kust slap on a small cooler on the bottom one of those piggy back ones. they do a good enough job and are quiet.

The X15 doesn't require active cooling in a well ventilated case.
I have a 2nd generation Cheetah and I have a HDD cooler for it (also for the old 7.200 IBM SCSI HDD) but todays last generation drives don't need it anymore as long as your case is well ventilated.

Those coolers sometimes (if they are well built) will make the drives a lot quieter though...
