problem with network controller

the network controller on my soyo dragon main board causes the internet to be slow. i have to wait quite a while b4 it loads a page. i think its a conflict with the modem somehow, but the bios and windows report no resource sharing between the two devices. the lan works fine with or without the modem on. but the modem lags and is generally slooow when the lan driver is in stalled. i remove the lan driver and the modem works fine. the modem is in pci slot 4, the lan is built in. anyone have any thoughts?

You may have a PCI IRQ channel sharing problem (this is NOT the same as an IRQ conflict, there are four PCI IRQ channels labelled A - D and all your PCI and AGP devices must share them)). This problem does not affect ISA cards.
This problem is very common with NICs, some PCI sound cards (the SBLive in particular is VERY prone to it) and SCSI controller cards. These cards do NOT like to share a PCI IRQ channel I explain the problem in detail here with a fix:

Try moving the modem to another free slot.
If you have no free slots available, or none of your free ones work, then make a note of which slot each card is currently installed in right now. Pull ALL your PCI cards except the video card and boot up. Make sure the system is working okay. If the problem consistently happens when playing a game, run that game now and make sure it's okay (most games will run just fine without a sound card installed by-the-way).
If the system seems stable shut down and install ONE CARD AT A TIME. Start with the sound card as that's usually the prime culprit. Make sure that the sound card does NOT share an IRQ with any other device. If it does, or the system acts up, move the card to a different slot until it's resolved.
Repeat this process with all the PCI cards starting with NIC card next if there is one.

i see what you are saying and i think its the right track, but the sound is onboard, and so is the lan
there is a pci vid card in pci slot 1 and the modem in slot 4. i tried the moving them around thing alread. does anyone know where to find the pci slot irq routing info? i looked at soyo but its not there. i dont know really where else to look. any info would probly be helpful.

What kind of modem? Could just be a crappy modem.
If you've tried it in every possible slot, nothing else to do but try another modem. I remember having similar problems with some cheap HP56 modems at work a year ago. They seemed to conflict with everything.
Went back to Diamond Supras and USR modems and had no problems.

Oh man those cards are CRAP!
Trying to save a few bucks, company I used to work for ordered a bunch of them. They gave us so many compatibility problems we tossed them all in the trash.
Here's a Diamond Supra MAX PCI for $15

Problem Solved.
i found a small jumper on the modem and switched it to the 2-3 pins for kicks and played musical slots. works good now with vid in slot2 modem slot 4. thanks mr. flying penguin for putting me on the right track.
