Defrag programs lockup HELP!!
I can't seem to defrag my hard drive I have tried windows defrager and nortons and both lockup toward the start of defraging. My hard drive like 72% not fragmented. Its a 40gb maxtor hard drive. I have run scandisk norton and windows version with no trouble except for maybe lost clusters which could of been caused from turning off computer because it froze. My computer runs everything else fine with no trouble.

If it's one big partition, it will take all night to defrag.
It's normal for Windows Defrag to stop at 10% and stay there a long time. As long as the drive continues to be accessed, don't worry.
28% fragmented is VERY fragmented. It's possible (although this is rare) that the drive is so fragmented that Windows can't run Defrag properly (this happens when you have a lot of non-contigous blocks).
Try booting into Safe Mode and see if it'll defrag all the way (it will take even longer in Safe Mode though).
Another option is to install the drive temporarily in another computer as a spare drive and defrag it from there.
Hope this helps...

I too was having probs before with one of my older Maxtor HDDs. It couldn't defrag or scandisc anymore without locking up or doin' a BSOD even though things seemed OK otherwise. The same HDD did that in 2 different mobos too, even after formatting. I think it's goin' south.

Worked in safe mode
Well i booted up in safe mode ran windows defrag and guess what no freeze. Also I didn't have any other programs running. So my hd must of been so fragmented that winblows couldn't do it without crashing.

I was running 0 programs in background
No other programs at all where running in background.
My computer still freezes if i try to run defrag in regular windows mode. I'm guessing reinstall windows and see if it still does it.
