Ok, when I reinstalled windows, it seems to have installed the incorrect drivers for the modem. All I know for sure is that its 56k, made by US Robotics, and is an ISA modem...
Anyone know how I can identify it for sure...
FYI: I tried Dell's driver download site (for the XPS R450) and they didn't have ANY ISA modems in the list... HMM... ?
is this component part of a dell computer

hey sean is this dell computer. well i have no idea the one you have but at work all of our dell models and gateway models have serial number like this
example
ser#4798247982798
look somewhere around the dell case it should be small sticker and it has numbers on it type it on their database it should tell you all the components it has and what drivers it has for it!
click here to type in your service tag sticker numbers okay and choose what model you have okay
after you do that it will tell you the specs of motherboard and cpu and peripherals and around there you should find your 56k modem
remember people order the computers custom made

although your model has certain parts as others dell sometimes puts different components in the same model. like at work we have dells that have all the same model number and cases are alike but the video card and cpu are different in each one. hey also one thing doesnt dell come with restore disks there should be one that says drivers cd okay. thats all the help i can give you.
another way to identify it is to open the case and look at the model number on the modem. like my 3 com ethernet if you see it up close it says #3c905-b so i know i have to download drivers for the 3 com model 3c905b. its easy as that? eithery way. if this computer is under warranty i would recommend looking for the service tag sticker

One step ahead of you. Used the service tag, and all they have a PCI modems. I checked again just now to confirm that it really is an ISA modem, and I am SURE it is. I tried removing the modem, and reintsalling, but Windows installed the same drivers.
When I try to dial, it checks the dial tone, but then it just continuously clicks...then I get a busy signal. Seconds later the modem re-dials..

you could also look at the largest chip on the modem and note any number/letters, or on the pc board there may be an imprint or a sticker with the modem model or an fccid code. you can use this info at driverguide.com for getting a driver. user name
