What Causes Games To Quit To Desktop All OF A SUDDEN?

I am having alot of trouble lately with this older system.
I put a celeron 900 in it but it has a voodoo 3 still.
System seems stable except for games and some mouse driver issues...which I think I have straightened out.
384 megs of ram ..dx 8.1
lately 3d games like Quake 3 and NHL 2001 have been quitting in the middle of the action right to the desktop.
Does anyone know where to begin looking for the problem?
Its not from hitting the windows key or anything.
any ideas?
thanks

If it's doing that in the middle of action then that tells me it's heat related. Perhaps even the v3 overheating. I'd suggest to replace the heatsink compound on the cpu and if it still happens do the same to the v3's heatsink.

You might try leaving the side panel off first and aim a fan at them. Sometimes that will help with the answer. ;)

Thanks Blade...yea it might be because I had the cover off for a while and now its back on.
The case was dusty too so the voodoo 3 could be drying up with the heat on here in winter too.
I want to get a new vid card but keep this one going for the kids..
Does anyone know what bios settings I should use for the voodoo 3?
I noticed that the irq for vga was disabled....that sounded wrong to me so I enabled it ans so far so good.

The voodoo3 is not a real AGP card, but you do need an IRQ assigned for it to work properly. I had a Voodoo3 for a while, and that sucker does get hot. I ended up installing a small fan onto the heatsink and I never had any problem with it during my 2 years with the card.

I've got a V3-3000 now in my XP box, no probs. I've also got a GeForce2 GTS in my main box and it's a good card for sure. I'm in no rush to buy yet another new video card as I can't imagine why I'd NEED one.

Unfortunately, as much as I also want to play Duke Nukem Forever too I'm doubting that we'll ever see it :( . Maybe our grandchildren will play it someday?

Hi,

Bought a GF3 ASUS Deluxe with 3d shutter glasses, and TV out, great quality if a bit pricey, but you get
anisotropic filtering, etc.

See ya

Whenever i've had "Crash-to-desktop" issues in a game, it's usually been due to drivers (half-life did that to me all of the time on my K7V, updating the Via AGP driver took care of it).

Well It seems to be only happening now on QUake 3 while Im online gaming.
I can play NHL 2002 Unreal Tourney single or online and QUake 3 single player no problems now.
When I try to play quake 3 on the net it just quits in the middle after only 2 minutes or so to the desktop.
Maybe its a network card issue?
any tweaks for Quake 3?
thanks for any help...
I do have a gamma 28 blower on the voodoo 3 and it was all dusty so I cleaned it out but I dont think its a heat issue now since I can game for hours in single player....
