windows nt 4.0 will be discontinued.
nt4.0 will be no more. but i was reading that windows nt 5.0 i coming out soon

Win2K IS NT 5.
you won't stop seeing NT Server 4.0 in use any time soon - too many IT departments using it that have absolutely no reason to upgrade. There's also a LOT of server based software out there that's not certified for Win2K.

Windows 2000 = NT 5.0
Windows XP = NT 5.1
What's happening is that Microsoft is discontinuing support for NT 4.0, no more service acks or hot fixes (except for a really critical issue).

All the above is true. We use NT 4.0 at work and it's not likely that it'll be replaced by either Win2K or XP in the forseable future although certainly possible there. Even if it was replaced by either of the two newer OSs, it wouldn't really matter in useage. Win2K is very similar to NT but nicer IMHO. I'm still undecided on how excited XP makes me, maybe just because I'm still not using it everyday. Win2K (or NT5) is a great OS IMO.
Did anyone miss Win3.1 when it died? Not me.

Bottom line is that NT4 is a rock and it's proven. Most companies run proprietary or custom software and it's not worth the manpower and time to certify it for a new OS.
IT Engineers are VERY conservative when it comes to software certification.
There's really nothing in Win2K Server that's of any benefit in a corporate environment. You don't need plug and play (and some people like me would argue that NT4 is stabler BECAUSE it doesn't have PnP), USB, firewire, Direct3D or a pretty GUI for a server.

I just wish MS would stop trying to make NT4 and Win 2K servers incompatible, so you HAVE to upgrade your NT4 server there have only been a few instances of this so far though.

Actually at my ex-employer we rolled out Win2k almost immediately. We have one of the largest Windows datacenters in the country (2500 Win2k servers) and the remote management and administration features built into Win2k where a God send for us.
Which reminds me, anyone hiring a Windows-Geek used to application and system monitoring in an enterprise environment using HP & home made tools? I'm looking, and will relocate!
