Never heard of such a thing.

6Gb drives use an older design than modern large drives. I'd consider a modern large drive far more reliable.

Stick to a name brand, of course. For instance Samsung and Fujitsu drives in my experience have very short lifetimes - they also have commensurably short warranty periods.

All laptop drives are slow - they're generally 4500 RPM. That's the tradeoff for making them so small.

True is that the laptop HDD's are SLOW but I doubt that laptop HDD's above 6GB die faster than the smaller ones ... you wouldn't be able to provide a link to that article if it's online, would you ?
The newer models are definetly faster and most likely more reliable than the older <6GB drives.

Some of the newer IBM 2.5" HDD's are actually running at 5400 RPM, I could search for the model number when you think you can find a shop that can order one.
It'll be more likely in a shop that also has a corporate sales department although I dunno, ask around. I don't have a link handy for an online shop that sells 2.5" HDD's.

Well, you could ask about it @ the http://www.storagereview.com forum.
