Need Help>Home Network>Internet Sharing>Cable Modem>Dynamic IP????

Post by WeekendWarrior »

My isp is chaning their services and settings this week.
They suck ...anyway I was using @home in Canada and all was well now they are going to be using the ROgers.com network.
There page said I had to make changes to my email etc..now nothing works...no email nothing.
Big question is I used to use a static ip address on this comp and access the internet and home network on the other comp - it worked well.
Now I am told I have to use a dynamic ip .
Can I still share the internet on both comps?
I am using 2 nic's in this comp and connected to the other comp through one nic and the internet cable modem through the other.
I am running win me.
thanks for any info or ideas.

As long as you're using some kind of proxy server (Sygate, Winproxy, etc) or Windows ICS, should be no problem.

Thanks FP I was hoping you might answer this.
My big question is when my isp starts using the dynamic ip address will I still be able to share the internet with ics?
They want to charge another $10 for each ip that accesses the net.
Can they detect it?
SO I think I just have to change the nic that is connected to the cable modem to use "obtain ip address" and the nic that is connected to the home network I can still assign the ip?
thanks again

ICS doesn't care whether you have a static or dynamic IP, as long as the computer has internet access. Should be no problem.

And no, they have no way of knowing that you're sharing your connection unless you tell them.

Exactly. All public IP address is the one address givin to your NIC hooked to the cable modem, all other computers use that 1 IP to access the net, which is why some software gives hassles when 2 machines try to use the same port to the same server (generally for games).

Thanks guys ...I think when I changed my setting for the tcp/ip for the internet I also changed the nic connected to my home network to use "obtain ip address" that is why it stopped working.
I got it going now...
My isp (rogers) says it has to be dynamic by Nov 30.
