Just wondering and if so what is a good program to do it with?

They sure can if you have the time. It takes a lot of time. The faster the processor, the faster you can rip. Check these out :

One night generally or less. Takes me about 6 hours to convert the VOBs to AVI (DivX Compression). 1.4 Ghz AMD, 512MB SDRAM, Win 2k (usin XP now, haven't tested in XP) Here's the order of programs I use:

SmartRipper
FlaskMPEG
VirtualDub (if necessary for syncing problems)

SmartRipper takes approx. 20 minutes to ri the VOB files from the DVD. Then you open up FlaskMPEG and make the appropiate setting changes and then begin the conversions. This is the longest portion. If either a) the audio and video are out of sync or b) the AVI fie isn't "valid" I open it in Virtual Dub and basicaly do no processing, just make a new AVI file. I have some links to some tutorials at home but I'm outta town so I'll post when I get home.

Maybe I'll try this too if I have the time someday, surely sounds like a hassle compared to a normal cdr burn in minutes.
Anyone here know if and when it'll become "legal" with a fast DVD burner or better (faster) CDR-DVD software, like all in one maybe?

I've tried it a few times, but it's tedious and needlessly complex. Someone needs to write a simple single program with wizard.

i've tried it once, but it took forever.

i guess its okay if you just want to accumulate quantity.
but you can't beat the quality of dvds, and all the useful features (chapter stops, navigation, ease of use in dvd players).

There are already all-in-one programs available, some free, some commercial.

- Easydivx (freeware) http://easydivx.does.it/ creates a Divx backup in 7 steps. It took 3.5 hours to create a copy on a 1.3GHz PC (plus burning time with external burner software). Backups only run on PC, it's divx. Not perfect yet but also not bad for freeware.

- http://www.gdata.de/ with "DaViDeo VCD" (~$40) or "DaViDeo professional" (~$60).
The first one will create VCD or SVCD, the second one also includes AVI support.

There's also "DVD to Disk" (~$30) but I can't find it right now, maybe still in the works.

I haven't tried the software myself (from article in German C'T magazine) cause the backups can't compete with the original.
There's nothing better than putting a new DVD into your homeplayer, switch on the 16:9 TV and pump up the volume on your hometheatre soundsystem.

Be aware that even copying a DVD is illegal. You are breaking an encryption scheme (CSS). Breaking an encryption scheme on copyrighted work is illegal, thanks to the DMCA. I know about fair-use and all that, but copying a DVD to Divx is illegal, under any circumstances.

With that said, I found a guide at http://www.flexion.org that makes AWESOME Divx. It takes more time and dedication than most are willing to give to making good copies, though. The first time you do it, it takes about an hour of setting stuff up and getting your copy made, and about 10 hours of CPU time to crunch away (on a 733 P3). I can do one in 10 minutes or work now, but it still takes about 10 hours to make a GOOD divx. You can make a crappy divx with other methods, but I don't reccomend making crappy divx. The compression is heavy enough as it is.

I generally like my DIVX to be about 10 MB/minute, or about 1.3 mbps. At this rate, they are higher quality than VHS, and look super when outputed to a non-hidef televison.

Okay so just for grins I used EasyDivx which seems VERY simple to use and rather fast (90 minute movie to 3 hours at normal Divx 4 and 6 hours using 2-pass Divx 4).

BUT my audio track is out of sync with the video! I've heard this is common.

How do I EASILY fix that?

Anyone doing this on an XP machine?
I have ripped Several DVDs to DIVX when I was on 98, now Im running XP and I cant get Flask to run properly anymore
