hi everybody, i have an SMC barracade router with the built in firewall in it. and i am really hoping that somebody can please help me and tell me how to turn off the firewall function. or even tell me if i cant turn it off. i need to turn it off because of all the programs i use arent compatible with that firewall junk. thanks in advance everybody!

You can't turn it off as far as I know, but you shouldn't be having too many problems. The SMC is very savvy about modern apps and games that need to work through a firewall.

There are a few special situations that will involve adjusting settings. ESPECIALLY if you try to run a server behind a firewall.

If you make one computer the DMZ host... does that essentially take that computer from behind the firewall?

AH Yes, that's exactly what it does. Some routers handle it differently though.

If your router supports it, that will expose it directly to the internet, albiet still on an internal LAN IP. It's not always called DMZ on all routers though. I forget some of the other terms.

I'd also make Darn sure the system is secure against intrusion, and I wouldn't enable file sharing on it.

I have an SMC. Kept it even after my oldest moved out and I only have one puter running off it...

You can put your puter in the DMZ if you want, but you will be naked to intruders and hackers.

You should be able to get your apps working through the firewall, the SMC is one of the better routers for port forwarding etc.
