secondary: Maxtor Diamond 7200rpm 20gig HD

After I installed all the hardwares in my computer. My windows for some reason would never boot up. It would auto-restart on its own, or it would make it through the windows login screen and then my explorer will crash. So I decided to format my IBM HD out of frustration along with my newly added maxtor HD. Then I turned off my computer, turned it back one, booted up with a boot disk made from Windows 98SE. I ran setup, everything was fine. But then it would give me error messages, or just stop functioning repeatedly at different sections of the setup. the furthest I got to was installing windows till 99% (crashed at that # and never went on). I tried formating my HD again, reinstalling it several times, it would give me an error message of all sorts. Could it be the CD? (burned by the way...) or some hardware compatibility problems?? suggestions plz =P

could be it doesn't like the 2nd ram stick, try it with just the original stick of ram and get it running good. Then go for the 2nd stick of ram and see if it works.

didn't work. pulled out one of the ram sticks. rebooted, ran setup. crashed without an error message...

What you using for a power supply? 300 watt psu's can be marginal sometimes for faster Tbirds. Also, make sure you first try default bios settings to get it running. Lowest settings possible.

I doubt it has anything to do wtih my PS. I have a 350W PS.
I have a feeling it's my Windows 98SE install CD. It's burned...it worked last time when I was formatting and reinstalling my notebook computer. But I guess it got damaged or something. =/ I highly doubt it would be a hardware issue here...I might as well try out other CDs to see if they work =P

Anyway, are you using the same A7V that you were with the Duron? What board revision is it?

well when I bought it they said it was a 266fsb one...don't ask. but anyway...
yeah I'm using the same A7V133 board. I dunno which reivision. but it has the DIP switches and the multiplier unlocking stuff on it =P

That means you have LILO in your MBR. LILO is the boot loader for Linux. Use a boot disk and type in fdisk /mbr and then reboot and see what happens.

ok...somehow I managed to install windows. but it still gives me weird crashes. a lot of blue screens. I mean A LOT...could it be my hardware?????

ok..this is funny. I down clocked my 1.2ghz to a 900mhz. and it's all stable now...can someone tell me why? since the a7v controls the multiplier through the DIP switches. I set it to 12x to get it to 1.2ghz. Is that normal? something tells me that there's something that I didn't do...

Alright if u down clocked it and it works its the chip. Make sure u have adequate cooling and make sure the right voltage/bus speed/multiplyer is set.

Now you tell us it's an A7V133... that would have been helpful earlier (just ribbin' ya )

How old is the board? I might check with Asus on this, there was a number of KT133A chipsets released that were NOT stable at 266 MHz FSB. If possible, get with them and find out if your board is one with a bad chipset.

Oh, oh... Check the I/O voltage setting, the VIO jumper is what you need to look for. Asus sets the I/O voltage to 3.45v by default, and I know some people have cured stability problems by dropping it to 3.31 volts (which is what it's supposed to be, BTW). It sounds weird but it works in some cases.

Also go into your BIOS setup and make sure the CPU core voltage is at least 1.75v.

hm...I bought my A7V like the beginning of this year. It could be cuz I didn't update my BIOS yet. Do u guys suggest me to replace my tbird and try? or I just need more cooling? (I have 13fans blowing in my case....) plus. I checked the heatsink, and it wasn't overheated. can you guys give me some general knowledge on the tbirds? I thought they are 266fsb. so why do I have to set my multiplier at 12x to get 1.2ghz?? (that means fsb=100)? or am I wrong...
