Did you even try?

Post by eGoCeNTRoNiX »

if it's working in the other CD-ROM then there could very well be something wrong with the new drive, or something wrong with the way you have them hooked up. I really think you should try this. But it's your choice.. The boot disks won't help you read the CD if the CD-ROM is bad. You could save yourself a lot of time.. GL either way.. eGo

Finnaly..

Post by StEaLtH-X »

Finnaly narrowed it down.. It isnt the CD-Drive or anything else.. Its the disc.. I tryed an Upgrade version windows xp and it booted up perfectly.. IOnly thing is it requires as previous version of windows which I do not have...Good news is.. I'm geting a FULL VERSION from a freind which i'm about 95% will work.. So for anyone with this future problem.. XP wont boot off of a backup copy... Unless u have better luck than I had..

I have 4 back up copies.. ;) I still don't think there's anything wrong with the CD.. If it booted up in the other computer with the other CD-ROM then it should have worked in that one. Still doesn't seem like you tried swapping out the CD-ROM, but to each their own. GL with it and hope you get it figured out. Patience is a virtue.. remember that.. eGo

I was installing windows.. it formatted my hard drive and then when it went to restart when it came back on, same boot disc failure.. even after I installed, so WTF? why does everyone act like its so ez to boot off a backup disc.. Ego what do you think is wrong? the cd-drive must be working or it wouldnt have read the cd..

I don't think it ever did..

If you were using the boot floppies all of the formating commands and such were probably on the floppy bud. You still haven't said if you tried switching out the CD-ROMs, I know it's a hassle, but go ahead and pull the drives and switch them out and see if that fixes if, if you haven't done this already. If there's nothing wrong with the CD-RW and you have it hooked up right then it should be working. If you, and you state above you did, put the CD in another computer and booted off of it then it should be working in this one. When you get the POST screen does it show the CD-RW? Or just the HD?

Taking the CD out and leaving it out unless it prompts you for it.

Finally got it.. I had my friend come over.. It was a problem with the jumper on the HDD.. Installing windows wouldnt have been possible without those boot discs.. Atleast not on my system.. But its up and running.. Needs some tweaking to get it running right..But windows is on there and working..

That Jumper being Wrong..

Would have caused you problems with installing XP off the CD as well.. I almost bet you that if you put that CD in now and started over it would work.

Well you might be right... The HDD was set to (Duel) Master, which made it think that I had two hard drives.. It needed to be set to Single.. The Cd is also set on Master...... Hey, does anyone have any suggestions about tweaking to get the most out of my system?
