I've had a similar RAM experience once. Got a couple sticks for a laptop that were from Crucial (they never failed me before). Well, when I put either one or both in, it wouldn't boot. I had to put one of the original sticks in one slot & a new stick in another slot for it to detect it. Then the laptop was fine with the second stick booting.
