What's USB speed for drives

Let me warn you. I had a Iwill XP333. Great board but the ALi chipset has it's quirks, and I was never really happy with USB performance on it. I'd have issues when using external hard drives where the drive would get disconnected during large file transfers. I eventually wound up installing a good Belkin 5 port USB PCI card and used that instead.

the flash drives i use do 30-35 MB / sec with bench programs (hdtach)

but when i try copying a CD image to it, (700 mb or so) it goes down to 8 MB / S.

Thanks for all the replies and help.
I been tied up a bit with problems and 3d contests for awhile but contests end tonight so I should get back to fixing my stuff again which really needs to be fixed. I just been making do with what works as is and avoiding what don't.
