only time i've been told shielded is really needed is when its ran outdoors... i've ran unshielded everywhere u can think of and have never had trouble with it...

alright, that's good to know. i guess while i'm bugging you guys already, i'll ask one last question

i've recently been told that running more then 50 feet of cat5 cable will cause a lot of packetloss. the thing is, right now i'm behind about 75 feet of it, and i have a terrible connection. i'm still working on whether it's the cat5, the router or the actual signal from the modem.

is there any truth to that? it makes sense, but just wanted to make sure before i went calling my ISP telling them i get crazy amounts of packet loss.

in my office the longest run is 100+ from the switch - no noticeable loss

cat5 can run up to 300ft safely... anything after that is at your own risk...

alright, it's no where near 300 feet, so i'm alright. and i've spoken to my ISP, they'll be seeing about fixing the problem with the packet loss, it seems it's on their end.
