You can take the A+ test whenever (doesn't have to be in high-school) I just took the class originally cause I thought it sounded cool... ...I didn't even know what it was at the time. Once I took the class and realized it you can get an actual cert out of it, then I started paying more attention
The certs were free for us becuase we got a local company (bell tech logiks) to pay for our tests somehow. We basically got recognized by the state and were on the news a little bit so they thought they'd make themselves look good and pay for our tests
So basically what the cert says is I have basic knowlege of computers and an operating system (how to build/take apart/service a PC, which items are assigned to what IRQ/DMA, I/O Addresses, etc.) Mostly stuff that peeps on this board already know. (find out more over at CompTIA.com)
It's about $240 to take both the hardware/OS test through CompTIA. I suggest doing it if you're young becuase it atleast gets your foot in the door at some places. For instance, my Teacher already has people comming to him asking for kids to work for them during the summer. Looks like I might get a decent paying job doing what I wanna do
My senior year (next year) I'm taking Network+ with the same teacher. I was checkin' it out at the CompTIA site and it looks kinda hard since I don't really know much about networking/servers/databases, etc
I'm just your typical joe-shmoe that can build a PC right now. Hopefully I'll start compiling a lot of these certs....maybe go for some Microsoft ones. We'll see
