BSOD problems

Post by NascarFool »

Ok people, I need a little help here. I have a comp here that keeps dropping a BSOD on me.

A fatal exception OE has occured at 0028:FF001ABA in VxD hidvkd (01)

+ 0000025A The current application will be terminated

* Press any key to terminate application

* Press ctrl + alt + del again to restart your computer
You will lose any unsaved information in all applications

Press Any Key

I get this error when attempting to reinstall Win98 over the current Win98 and when ever I try to restart or shut down from the "Start" menu. McAfee virus scan is disabled and nothing else is running in the back ground. I get the same BSOD with two different power supplies and two different sticks of ram. I built this comp about six months ago for a coworker.

System Specs[/]
P3-600B (4.5x133)
Abit VA6 with latest bios (same bsod with previous bios)
235w PS (one that was in it)
300w PS (just tried this one and got the same error)
128megPC133 (tried it at 133 and 100)
32megPC133 (tried at 133 and 100) only one stick of ram was used for test purposes
Maxtor 8.4gig ATA33 hd (made a ghost image and then did a low level format on it, also a thorough scandisk was run and no errors found)
Creative 24x CD-rom
Voodoo3 2000 AGP
All other cards were removed for testing purposes
Latest Via 4in1 drivers installed with the same results

P.S. - It was doing this before the reinstall of Win98. I thought that reinstalling Win98 was going to cure it. :(

Is it always hidvkd? That file is probably related to the USB port - specifically mice and other USB input devices.

Try disabling the USB port in BIOS and see if that cures the problem. If it does, then you at least know it has something to do with that.

I've found installing mouse utility software for USB mice sometimes causes problems like that. You don't need to install the Logitech or MS utility that comes with the mouse - all you need is the driver.

Hope this helps...

The USB ports are disabled and not used. :(
There was a yellow exclamation on "Processor Support" in the device manager. I removed it and when I finally got it to reboot, the BSOD was still happening. I stand corrected, it doesn't do it if you click on "Shutdown" only on "Restart".
