One little networking question

Hi guys,

Used the search feature here and networked my 2 computers together. Found all the info I needed and everything went perfect.
The problem I have now is: When I dial the cable modem to connect to the internet it shows everything went fine but when I go to a website all I get is 'page cannot be displayed'. My computers can see each other and even play games, just no surfing the net. All I have to do to fix this is restart my host computer...then everything is fine. Of course I can live with this but thought someone might know what the real fix is.

Not sure I understand - "Dial the cable modem"? Your cable modem should be on all the time, there shouldn't be any "dialing" involved.

How exactly did you setup the network?
How are the computers accessing the cable modem?
Is the cable modem going into one computer on it's own NIC or are you putting the modem on the network via a hub or switch?
What are you using for sharing the cable connection?

The usual reason for getting a "page cannot be displayed" is if your DNS server settings are incorrect. You can verify this by trying to ping the IP of a known site. If you can ping a site but can't browse it then you've lost DNS services.

This doesn't explain why you can correct the problem by rebooting, though.

I'm a little fuzzy on your problem but I'll take a stab anyway. It sounds like your cable modem is grabbing an IP adress while your computer is already on. That's fine. However, you need to make Windows aware of the fact that it should refresh it's IP address. You are using DHCP here, right? If you are using Win95/98 simply go to Start -> Run and type 'winipcfg'. Then click on the refresh button. In Win2k go Start -> Settings -> Network and Dial up Connections. Disable your connection and then enable it again.

Sorry for the lack of information,

FP... This is a one-way cable system. http://www.ispchannel.com. BellSouth anounced dsl will be here before June, I'll change then for sure.
I used the ICS in 98se.
The cable modem is connected to my 3com NIC and I added a Linksys NIC and a crossover cable to connect to my client computer.

Solstice...One thing I noticed is only my 2nd NIC (Linksys) shows in the IP configuration box that you're talking about, in the drop down menu all that shows is 'ICSHARE adapter'. Don't see my 3 com NIC anywhere.

You should have two NIC entries in your Net Neighborhood properties, one for the 3Com and one for the Linkie. There should also be two TCP entries, one for each card. You can assign IP for the Linkie, but the 3Com must obtain an IP if your IP is dynamic. List everything in your Net Neighborhood if you still have problems. It's easier for us to help you when we know what you have.

I guess everything looks as it should? No one made a recommendation. Just for the record...am I doing anything illegal networking these two computers together without telling my cable company?

Everything looks fine. Without further information, I can only hypothesize that your TCP/IP settings are wrong. (This type of thing is best dealt with over the phone). The TCP/IP setting for the modem NIC should be set to obtain an IP automatically if your IP is dynamic. Run Winipcfg to check for this. You should be able to at least ping another host. If you can do this, then your problem is the DNS setting.

You shouldn't have to worry about the legality of your home network. Don't expect tech support to help you with it if you run into problems.
