Anybody using a BluRay burner?

Post by VidmanII »

Just curious as to how those are working. Putting 25-50GB on a disc is crazy ! Can't wait for the prices to come down a bit.

I bought a Lite-on about a month ago for Home Movies. It works good with the Sony PMB software that came with my camcorder. Save yourself a bit of money and buy a bare drive. The software that comes with them is total garbage. I've been using Verbatim single sided BD-R disks.

Sounds like a plan. How much do those Verbatim BD-R discs you're using hold?

I have software already. At least I think I do. Free prog, CDburnerXP.

I use it for dvd/cd burning and it's quite handy.

The BD-Rs I have hold 25G (2 hours 1080p). The double layers hold 50G but are just not worth the premium.

excellent. that does appear to be the best deal on current media. I wish I didn't have to pay state tax with newegg but the flipside is that with their warehouse being in NJ, I get stuff as fast as next day sometimes!

OEM drive would be fine. I'll keep an eye out for some web deals. I have some bluray playback software already that came with my Samsung BDROM, so that's not an issue.

What kind of speeds are you guys seeing (how long does it take to burn a nearly full disc)?

More interested in using BluRay for data archiving.

I'm seeing really quick burn times myself. Next time I made a disc I'll let you know. But it's way less than 1 hour..

I've been very impressed with burn times. I burnt a Roger Waters bootleg ~23G on 4X single-sided BD-R in ~25 to 30 min. 6X media is available but like the dual-layer medium, I can't see paying the extra cost to save possibly 5 or 10 minutes. Like DVD-R, DVD+R, and CD-R, the quality of the disks is going to be the determining factor. I try to avoid anything made in India. Japan is the best. I think Verbatim is made by Mistubishi.

Got a LiteON iHBS112 12x, 10 pack of 25GB OpticalQuantum BD-Rs, and 1 pack of Verbatim (with jewel case, haha) for $100.21 shipped. Ordered last week, got it today. Install was painless. Only thing I did was update my firmware from CL0G to the latest version, CL0K. Did a 24.6GB folder of mp3's from HDD to OpticalQuantum 4x(?) disc in 11 minutes and 58 secs. ImgBurn set the write speed to 10X right from the jump and the burn went flawlessly. Disc verify took some additional time but to me it's worth it. You can turn that feature off if you want.

Burner:

Media: getting rave reviews at 'egg and is pretty inexpensive too.

ImgBurn. really nice prog and free as well

LiteON firmware update.

It's all good. :-) enjoy.

Using ImgBurn v2.5.5.0

Yeah, nice update. Can't complain about an 11 minute 25gb backup.

One thing I'd suggest is to really read up on whichever burner you buy ( i.e. firmware updates, compatible media etc ) before you jump in. Same goes for whatever burning prog you decide to use. I chose ImgBurn because the prog's author has an amazing support forum.

It's located here.......
