Seagate FAT+

Post by b-man1 »

i've been looking for some type of media player for quite a while and finally picked up one of these:

http://www.seagate.com/www/products/hom ... eater_plus

got it from newegg for $59 last week and so far it works perfectly for what i need. plays every file type i've thrown at it, streams from network shares, usb drives, and even does netflix, youtube, and a handful of other online services.

this is a welcome replacement to the clunky desktop i've had sitting next to my tv (with a lowly VGA cable). HDMI output and seems to handle all the HD content i can throw at it without a blip.

not bad for $59! :D

I just RMA'd my second one. I hope I have better luck with my next one...Ugh

It is kick ass when it works.

what went wrong with your last two? i didn't see much in the reviews about ones dropping dead, but then again, i didn't look too hard. i went mainly off of newegg reviews and a few random searches.

edit...did some searching and found reports of heat being an issue. i just checked mine after finishing a movie (had it sitting on the floor...carpet floor...) and it was HOT. the 2.5" drive i put in the bay was burning up! i didn't notice the ventilation is on the bottom, so i moved it off the carpet and will see how it goes.

they both would freeze up. Doing anything. Watching netflix, off an internal seagate drive, off an external usb drive, off a thumb drivemy first one was day of release not sure what the rma'd one was. there is a lot of discussions about it on seagates forums. My new one will be here on Wednesday or Thursday I think. Mine wasnt a heat issue...or at least where i had it it shouldnt have been.

They seem nice to me, but the flexibility of an actual HTPC is hard for me to let go of.

htpc is useless for me now that comcast has gone almost fully encrypted digital. ;(

HTPC on all three of my TVs. I just use Comcast cable boxes with IR bugs to let Media Center change the channel. Works fine.
