revisit netbooks

i think it's been a few months since anyone mentioned them on here...

now that hard drive prices have dropped through the floor and you can get super cheap 500GB+ laptop drives, i'm thinking of possibly picking up a netbook for travel/backup use. backups would primarily be for photos taken (my dSLR eats up storage when shooting RAW...~25MB a pic).

so, a faster netbook with a good size drive that can run photoshop elements or similar for basic editing...hmmmmmmmmm

thoughts? what are the best choices these days for netbooks?

I have what could probably be considered a very early netbook-class laptop. A Dell Latitude C400. It's only a P3 with 512MB of RAM and a 20GB hard drive, but I got it for free so I can't complain. I love it, it's great for some quick web browsing. Tether it to my phone and it's great for that quick info lookup. I've been toying with the idea of replacing it with an actual netbook. I would probably get a lot more use out of one, since the Intel 830M chipset doesn't do Youtube very well. Well, it doesn't do much of anything very well >.>

I got a Gateway LT2032u Black Netbook Computer Factory Refurbished (Scratch & Dent) from http://shop.revonate.com/ for about 205.00 shipped and it does all I need.

Specs:

* Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz processor
* Windows 7 Starter
* 10.1" Display
* 1GB Memory
* 250GB Hard Disk Drive
* Webcam
* 802.11B/G

6 cell battery and I added a 1GB stick of ram as an upgrade up to 2GB.
Use it for Net access, portable storage backups for vacations (digi cam like you), watching movies and listening to music on airplanes on business travel and it has done all i have asked of it thus far. I do not dabble in PS but perhaps my specs and the link will help you make your decision. Like Greg, I say jump in!

Since doing so, I have ditched my Creative Zen Vision M (30GB) and have no regrets. I do maintain a small Ipod shuffle for exercise & doing yard work since they are cheap and super portable.

I actually run my Photo Booth business off one...they are amazing little systems.
