5050E CPU for gigabyte board and Laptop, New system build.

Post by canton_kid »

I still need to build my new desktop or tower system, got side tracked and bought a cheap laptop awhile back. I needed it allot for WIFI hotspots when I need large files. It's been great to have it, though I would liked a bigger one but not wanting to spend the bigger bucks.
I bought an Acer 5515 laptop at Walmart for $380 counting tax!
Pretty happy with it so far, but of course after my 15day return option ran out they got a bigger better Toshiba in stock for about $540 with tax I like much better :(

Anyway I am thinking about an AMD 5050E 2X cpu right now myself for a couple reasons.
Only $65 retail boxed, Dual core, 45watts and should work in the laptop when I upgrade to a 4 core later when prices drop again.
The 5200 2x seems to be good enough for me in the one system running here now anyway. Not sure how far I am stepping down with a 5050E 2X but I dought I will see that much difference? I was pretty happy with my Socket 754 till the system board blew up.

The laptop only has a 2650E CPU, single core, 1.6ghz. So far the laptop does everything I want it to, though sometimes a little slow to render 3d images or do some conversion stuff. I also have problems with Vista, I hate it!

I found some recent forum posts searching around that say the 5050E cpu works fine in the ACER 5515. The Mother board is a standard Am2 socket also according to Acer site and posts I read. Even 1 review on Newegg that says that is what they used the 5050E for also.

All the reviews about the 5050E 2X I read say it runs very very cool, and it's only 45watts too, important for the laptop power!

So for now I am thinking buying (later tonight) the 5050E cpu, GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-US2H, and 4 gigs Crucial ram 800mhz. $177 and $10 shipping at Newegg.
I used the crucail.com memory thing to find what ram is recommended for this gigabyte board then searched Newegg for it. About $13 difference in cost, $48 at crucial or $35 at newegg, same part numbers so I guess exact same ram, and I want all my parts to arrive at same time.

I want a 4 core system, but the cheapest CPU right now for what I want I think is about $150 (thought about $99 cpu but decided not to get that one).
I figure get the $65 5050E 2X now for the new system, when prices drop get that $150 4X later for around $100 then use the 5050E 2X in the Laptop.

Years ago I got tired of buying something for $200 and watching the price drop to $100 a few months later, so I set $100 as my limit for about any single part.
