Seagate modifying their OEM drive warranty to 3 yrs
yeah, i'm more concerned with quality/reliability than the actual warranty. if warranty length indicates what you said, then it is indeed a bad sign. BUT...
i sort of understand why they would do this.
example:
order a retail drive. you get it in full packaging, nice box, protected, etc. seagate packed it and knows how it is protected.
order an OEM from newegg. it shows up in an anti-static bag. seagate has no control over shipment packaging/protection quality, etc. this could result in damage in shipping (that may not be apparently immediately) or influence MTBF.
just a thought.

what ever they have all gone up and down over the past 10 years or more. went from 5 to 3 to 1 to 90 to 3 to 5 and all over the place.

The price difference between an OEM and a Retail Segate drive from NewEgg is maybe $5 - $10 most of the time. I ALWAYS buy retail. I don't like the way they ship OEM drives.

The issues with Seagate's 1.5TB drives was a firmware issue. Seagate made it so hard to get it, requiring you to contact support and they would send it by email... Newegg now has it available on their website.
When all else fails, replace the user.

Zyfer: Any time I need a drive I do a search on NewEgg first. I usually see OEM and retail drives - not for all of them but most of them come in both flavors. Unless there's some incredible discount that week on the OEM drive the price difference isn't all that much normally.

Yeah, I am just saying, I was just looking at Newegg, they have nothing but OEM for Seagate.
For the warranty, I think it is Seagate trying to push their ES model drives. People don't buy them as they cost more and there is nothing definitive about a difference.
