Memory Testing

Post by Key Keeper »

I know there was a thread a while back about a good app to test memory just cant seem to find it for some darn reason. I want to test while booted into windows since I dont have a floopy. Can I run a memory app from a CD or does anyone know a good solid app to run from within windows? I built this machine about 8 months or so ago and it has been running fine (vista ultimate btw...) but now it just randomly locks up. Some times it will run all day or sometimes it just locks up during boot (bar scrolling just stops). Ive updated vid drivers, chipset drivers, reseated the memory and the sound card and set the bios to default settings (minus raid). Its even locked up in safe mode. I looked in the event viewer and only error related to it is "system shut down unexpectedly"...which doesnt help much. I moved the memory to different dimms and after about 30 minutes it blue screened. When I first built this rig I had issues installing windows till I manually set the memory timings but all was well for quite some time. Memory is Crucial "LanFest" CL11184.8H.

The only one that I know of is MemTest, but it has to be booted before windows.

MEMTEST 86+ Download the ISO for Hiren's Boot CD and you can run it from the CD.

Did last night and it passed with one stick. I was gonna test it on other stick and then both but my wifes having a baby in the morning so wont get to work on it for few days. I think I might have fixed it though. A guy at work has two newer laptops both with vista and he had same problems on both starting last week or so. After updates his started locking up randomly. I un-installed the updates from last week and gonna let it run for a while and see what happens.

check out http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
many different tools including memory test tools. You can run it from the CD or now even from a bootable USB stick.
