Computer won't post/boot up

Post by tunis5000 »

I get home from work and my computer is off (was on when I left) and now it won't turn on. It's plugged into a decent UPS/surge bar, so wtf? Everything else works (monitor, speakers, etc). When I turn the power supply switch off for a minute, then on, my fans spin up for a few seconds, then it dies. Please don't tell me my power supply is shot, it's not that old and it's a good one too!

Could be PSU, could be the mobo.

Process of elimination. Clear the CMOS memory. Pull all the RAM but one stick. Swap out the PSU with a spare unit. Check for swollen or leaking capacitors.

Can you get the cover off easy? Unhook to power wire from the supply to the motherboard and see if the power supply and fan runs then. That should tell you something. Short in the MB may shut it down, but not sure on that.

If you pry that old PSU open I bet you find some bad caps in it.
