Post by renovation »

i went and checked wifes unit -power light was on .but computer was off and when i hit the power on switch .it would start to power up (power supply kicked on ) and turn off .before it even come up to a lighted screen on start up .and the computer shuts off . so i swap out the 450 watt codegen power supply.with a true power 480 watt . get it all hooked up plug in the power cord and it fired right up .without pushing in the power button . it fired right up to windows xp pro . and all seemed fine .i have windows shut down the computer and now the power light on the front is lit up red .but i hit the power or reset button .and the computer will not fire back up .any ideas ?

pull the front off the case and make sure that none of the push switches are stuck and that all leads are where they should be and not grounding out on the case....for starters

might be a defective power switch - you might be able to swap the reset switch for the power switch.....or just hot-wire the power switch....

if you haven't already, unplug the PSU from the wall socket, also from the connectors on the mainboard and disconnect the monitor and anything else that is powered and clear CMOS

If you look at my recent posts including 2 systems driving me nuts. I think we may have an almost similar problem for one of my systems. To begin with I was just losing video signal durring boot up, then I started getting system shutdowns but the led on the system board is still lit.

When this happens now, a shutdown durring boot, the LED on system board is lit, maybe like a sleep mode?
I press the power switch or anything else nothing happens. Press and hold the power switch untill the LED goes off on the system board, let go!
Wait a second then press the power switch again as normal and the system boots fine.

This system was losing the video signal but the fans and such were still running to beging with, I have tore it down to bare bones and swapped all parts but the CPU, about 4 times. It seems nothing is the problem, all the parts work fine in other systems and same problem here with any other parts. Some how I got rid of the video signal lost problem it seems, but now I get a part boot and then shut down on the first try almost everytime, second try is almost always working.

My geuss is it has to be a bad M/B for mine. Just buggy. When it boots it will run fine and do anything it is supposed to do, just a best geuss if it will boot.

Why the problem changed from running and lost video to failed boot not running is anyones geuss. The kid said it did the shut down for here a couple time before, but then it was only giving me a lost signal error on the monitor and appearred to be running.
