Remembering screen size problem

Post by blade »

My brother has a 32" LCD which he uses for his computer monitor. Using his previous system it remembered display settings when restarting.

I built him a new system and now when it restarts it always goes back to 640x480 mode.

I have tried different video drivers, different video card, a repair windows install and still the same problem. Everything is up to date.

Any ideas? thanks :)

I suspect that the AGP driver or motherboard drivers were not properly installed. If the AGP driver is not properly installed, or the system defaults to the worthless Generic driver that comes with Windows, then the video card falls back to Safe Mode VGA operation.

Update or re-install the mobo drivers and I bet all is well.

wiz guy eh :P

FP, thank you. I will try that next. But he uses a pci expres video card. It is in a asrock mobo that has both agp and pci express. Tried an agp card and still the same problem. I set it in the bios for each card.

I'll post later after I try that. thanks :)

do windows load slowly from top to bottom and does it do a sucky job of scrolling?

with an ati card and via chipset i get this and the resolution issue on a clean install of xp before i install drivers.

it probably isn't the video card driver, or the mainboard chipset driver alone causing it; rather the order in which i install them.

for via (4 in 1) i know this problem does not occur when i install the chipset drivers (especially the gart driver) first, then the video card drivers.

when you uninstall, are you using something like driver cleaner pro to make sure everything is uninstalled??

Went through many tries and finally got it to remember only 1280x720. Not 1360x768 (or something like that). At other higher reso's the fonts are garbled and shake. Curser slowly and shakily moves.

No via chipset here wpublic. It will scroll slowly when in a higher reso. Only at 1280x720 are the fonts sharp and not garbled.

I did use that catalyst cleaner several times. This is with a x800xl 256mb ati video card.

I don't get it. The previous was using a dell with onboard video and it was fine. Using a nice system with a far better video you think it'd accept the reso the LCD is capable of. But, 1280x720 is better than nothing and at least everything is sharp.

Tried a repair install, cleaning old drivers, installing the latest agp drivers (even though this is pci express video card), and various ati drivers. With most it'd always start up in 640x480.

thanks guys
