Win98SE installation

Post by RubberDuckie »

OK ... I HATE WITH A PASSION working on older computers. Did it in the past...dont need to do it now.
However I have a pickel here.
I talked my neighbor into reformatting and reinstalling 98 on their old laptop because it was having problems. Therefore I have reformatted it and I can not get Win98 to install properly.
I have done this 3 times today with the same result:

Windoes protection error. You need to restart your computer.
c:\WINDOWS\system\vmm32.vxd: Missing/unable to load.

The file is there and I can get into windows via safe mode but not normal. Like I said, this happens on the first boot after a fresh install. Wacked..

you can boot to dos and manually restore the file from the 98se disc, or you can do a repair installation. here is the procedure:

read the same article this afternoon, good article on how to protect yourself incase this happens but not that helpful if it happens prior to backing one up... but repairing the file requires a reinstall. This is happening because of a reinstall...

Not sure what I did but I got past it.
I booted without the Win98 CD in the drive and it is completing the installation. Hope this works.

Did I mention I hate working on older computers.

I was just gonna say, make sure the Win98 CD isn't in there unless it asks for it. My old P200MMX lappy would BSOD non-stop during an install if the CD was in the drive..

I had this problem on a Dell Pentium II desktop. Eventually narrowed it down to bad hardware. I'd wager that this problem is related to the problems which caused you to re-install in the first place.
