I though of doing one like that... but with the fans on the inside instead of them actually making up the case.

Self defeating. That many fans would create disrupted airflow that would probably make it run HOTTER.

Had some idiot show up at a LAN party with the entire front panel under the drives bricked with fans and the thing ran so hot he had to leave the cover off.

I'd imagine a more effective design would be to have the fans on opposite panels of the case to create the airflow across the case, e.g. have the entire front panel blowing in and the entire back panel sucking out.
