Ok now where'd my drive go?

Post by blade_146 »

Ok so i finally got the rig up and running but i got one more problem to figure out. Ive had an old scsi drive and adaptec card that ive been using mainly as a small backup drive. So before i started on the new one i backed up everything i wanted to keep. Installed a fresh copy of XP pro on the new SATA drive. ADaptec card installed fine. Bios sees the scsi drive. Windows sees it in the device manager. Control panel does not see it so i cant get to it. WTF? How can it be seen and still not available?

Does it appear in the Disk Manager? (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management)

If so, right click on it and assign it a letter.

Do you have any mapped network drives? Common problem with Windows. SCSI drive may be trying to use the mapped drive letter and the mapped drive will supercede.

it wont let me assign a letter to it although i think i may have it figured out. My mobo has 4 pci slots. Thing is my video blocks one of them so that leaves me 3 to work with. Sound takes one, wireless card another and last one goes to the scsi. I looked thru my mobo manual (go figure) and the last one is colored orange and is apparently reserved as a communication slot. I wonder if that is what is keeping me from getting to the drive?

Try moving it to one of the other PCI slots temporarily.
