uh oh...

Post by Floater »

sorry, I'm sure this has been covered elsewhere, but I need a quick answer and I'm sure you guys know it...

here's the deal: I moved my computer innards from one case to another. between cases, I replaced the heatsink/fan on my Athlon 1.2 ghz processor. I plugged everything back in (at least I think I did), powered on the computer, all parts have power - drives, fans, video and LAN card, etc... but the computer won't post, and it's not sending any signal to the monitor. ive tried taking everything out except the video card and memory... same thing happens.

could this be a sign that I f'ed my processor?

other funny thing is that the power led on this new case doesn't light up (pretty sure i hooked up the led plugs correctly.)

thanks for any help.

check the power and reset plugs going to the case...maybe one is flipped and is causing the pc to hang. if the cpu was dead i would think you'd get some beep codes from the mobo...but make sure the vid card and RAM are seated fully.

Power LED (try turning the plug around). As far as the other, all I can recommend is pulling it from the case and seeing if it posts out of the case, if not, try another PSU first. GL!

update:

i think I found out what the deal is. there is something soldered to the motherboard (some sort of diode) directly underneath where the processor is seated. this thing for whatever reason is sticking up far enough to touch the underside of my Athlon... fried it. I suppose when I switched the heatsink/fan, I put enough pressure on the processor to make it touch this little doohickey.

im getting a new athlon in a few days and hopefully this one will work.

that diode is the cpu temp sensor. I'm unsure how this touching would have fried the chip. Maybe the H/S wasnt fully seated?
