Sasser Worm attacks our compnay

Post by Executioner »

Got to work today only to discover all of our companies pc's were infected with the Sasser worm:

Finally after about 4 hours, the IS team got pc's working again. The worm causes your pc to reboot and displays a clock that counts down. Once this is displayed, you can't do anything with your pc, not even to reboot it manually.

Man that sucks. Why do people insist on doing this crap and why didn't your IT department have the systems patched.

As with most companies, they are reactionary instead of proactive in getting updates. I haven’t seen it yet with my home network if it’s been out since Saturday.

I've got my home boxes locked down tight. For the life of me I just can't get over how lazy people are about patching their windows and/or updating their virus definitions.

I just had to remove a boatload of virus files for a customer who bought a system from me. He hadn't updated teh AV even once from the time I sold him the box ( 3 months ago ) and despite recommendations to save all critical data to the back partition, that I made for him, everything had gone into C drive. DOH !

I even make folders for people on the D partition for music, movies, critcal data, MyDox, Favorites and show them how to back up EVERYTHING. Every folder I made for him was empty.

And then of course you get the song and dance about what he needs saved from his fubar'd C drive.

HAHA. No prob, get out your wallet pal. :D

You can actually stop the 1 min shutdown countdown ... (at least in WinXP)

Start > Run... > shutdown -a
