Undeletable icons...

Post by demonmonkey1234 »

I've got 2 icons on my desktop and I have no idea where they came from. One is PCM100 and the other is INSTALL.EXE I've tried to delete them and it says

Cannont Delete PCM100: Sharing Violation The source or destination file may be in use.

It says the exact same thing for INSTALL.EXE, and I've traced them down to where they were originally from and tried deleting them there first and still nothing. It's real strange and frustrating.

Try booting into safe mode and delete them from there.

Just ran into the same problem the other day, and couldn't delete it from Safe Mode either.

However I found a handy tip after a Google search that worked. You'll need to navigate to the desktop folder from the DOS prompt so polish those DOS command line skills:

1. Right click on the taskbar and open task manager.
2. Choose the process tab in task manager.
3. Right click on explorer in the list and choose end process.
4. Now in task manager goto File | New Task (Run...)
5. Type cmd and navigate to the file you want to delete.
6. After you get to the file type del (your filename here.exe)
7. Now go back to task manager and choose File | New Task (Run...)
8. When the box opens type explorer.exe and hit return
9. Now the file is gone and all should be well.
