Volcano 12 fan knobs not responding

We just installed a volcano 12 heat sink and both knobs into the PC. We think we hooked everything up correctly to the hinksink, but when we turn the knobs there is no difference in fan speed. Are there any instuctions online to help us out, or have one of you had the same problem and have solved it since.

You don't use both controls.

We found what the problem is, the cable that connects the knob wire to the heatsink has 2 yellow wires leading into the connector (on the heatsink side) Well one of the yellow wires has broken away from the connector. We shoved it back into the black peice that is soposed to hold it to the connector but it doesn't help. Can we take off the black thing and just twist the wires together. Should we try that?
