.HTM and .HTML file icons aren't right... was this caused by an update?

Post by FlyingPenguin »

Anyone else seeing this? The icon for my HTM and HTML files is the default one that windows uses for a file that has no file association.

Rather annoying since I do web work. I checked the file associations and they're fine. I tried changing the icon to something else, even an icon in another app, and the icon still doesn't appear correctly.

Tried the TweakUI icon repair and that doesn't help either.

WTF?!

I just recently installed a bunch of critical updates and I wonder if one of them caused it.

This is happening on two completely different XP systems, and I know they were both fine last week.

Ive had the same problem before.
Dont know what fixed or caused it.
However if you install FrontPage or another htm editor it will fix it. (did for me atleast)

Might be on to something there. I have FrontPage 2003 installed recently on both these systems, but it's been a month and I know these icons only disappeared last week.

Hmmmm.....

go to explorer - tools - file type and look for those files then change the icon and Done.
or download microangelo and use the demo right click on that file and then pick the right icon.

Augix, read me post, I already tried that. I have been doing this for a while you know :)

It's very wierd. If I cange the icon or even the whole app in the file associations, I still get no icon.

I don't know if XP has this, but remember that Win98 had the SHELLICONCACHE file? Every now and then it would become corrupt. I finally had to install CacheMan and triple the size of the icon cache. Problem solved.

I think that's what the icon repair tool in TweakUI fixes - not sure, and that didn't help, but let me do some Google research on it. Thx.

Just a followup: I restored the boot and apps partitions to a 2 month old Ghost image (mainly because I has having another strange problem with web images in IE not loading properly). This image was before I installed Frontpage 2003 and Adobe GoLive! 6 so I suspect it was one of those two that was the culprit.

I installed both of those on the laptop and it's doing the same thing. I'll uninstall them from the laptop and see if it fixes it. I really don't need either app - Frontpage 2002 and GoLive 5 do everything I want anyway - wasn't impressed with the newer versions.
