System Noise

Post by FlyingPenguin »

Well I finally replaced my server's PSU with an Antec TruPower (the workstation already has one). Amazing how much that quieted my computer room.

Noise is particularly annoying for me because my server and workstation are at desk height on my immediate left, on top of a legal size 2 drawer metal file cabinet.

Curiously, now that the system fans are so quiet I can hear another noise from my workstation that's driving me batty. It's a low hum that throbs. I'm pretty certain it's a sympathetic vibration of the sheet metal panels (if I hold the sides tightly with my hands it stops).

I just ordered the 4 sq ft pack of that Dynamat product that everyone seems to rave about. I'll line the case with the stuff and see if it helps. I'm also going to find a rubber mat to put under the two towers to isolate them from the file cabinet.

I'm also looking at quieting my systems down some. Especially the one in my bed room. I'm even considering a dell for in there.

The Antec TruPower PSUs are extremely quiet. I can attest to that.

I was looking at a 430w trupower and some good quiet case fans. I might have to look into the Dynomat, and maybe some rubber washers for all the HDDs, if they would fit.
