Newbee needs help

Post by Wingnut21 »

Here are my two problems.

1. If I use the standard game port/joystick out games work fine but I have no Midi capability, for music devices. If I add a basic sound card (Creative 16) Midi ports work fine, but Joystick fails to work on either the original game port or the added sound card.

2. When trying to add a Cd-rom/Rw ( 16x10x40 Lite-On) to my system, it is recognized only once when I reinstall the IDE cable. If I shut down the system and restart/ especially if I unplug all power from the wall, it only has green light on CD and system fails to boot. I can reset the IDE and again it only works once.
I have used/checked this drive on an older machine and it works fine. I have set jumpers to slave and cable select with no change.
Hope someone out there has some ideas, I've been bangin my head against the wall for about a month now and boy does it hurt. Thanks for any and all help

Fixed the CD problem.. put drive in different bay. This drive is 1/4inch bigger than older drive. New drive was touching a capacitor on the MOBO and causing a secondary ground. Not good. Thanks for suggestion. Now if only I could figure out my MIDI propblem.

Your best bet is to just use a USB to gameport interface for joysticks and leave the existing gameport for you MIDI devices.

I'm using the Radio Shack MIDI to USB interface and it works great. Only $16:

I bought it for my LAN party system because I don't have a gameport connector for the onboard sound card. But I also started using it on my main system - it seems to work better than the onboard gameport.
